Junkanoo Celebrations

February 04, 2016

Mark your calendars because Junkanoo is coming to Andros. This annual gathering of locals and visitors alike is a celebration of traditional Junkanoo music and dance, displayed through parades of dance groups, musicians, and bright, colorful costumes. If you’ll be visiting Kamalame Cay on February 13, 2016, then we encourage you to join in the celebration, as it only comes a few times a year! And if you like partying through the night, then you’ll be pleased to know that these events typically last into the night. The story of Junkanoo has changed through time, but many have come to believe that Junkanoo originated after enslaved people were given three days off for Christmas, which they celebrated by singing and dancing through town in costumes and masks. A few minutes of the celebration and you’ll find yourself enjoying the beat, feeling the rush and having the time of your life.  Address: Nicholl’s Town, North Andros
