Get in Touch with the Bahamas' Ecology

July 27, 2016

If you’re at Kamalame Cay for a chance to appreciate the natural beauty of the Bahamas, you’ll most likely want to take a visit (if not multiple visits) to West Side National Park. This National Park spans about half of Andros Island, so it’s both accessible from Kamalame Cay and wealthy in local flora and fauna. For a full sense of its beauty, you may want to make a day trip out of it.

You may want to begin with the Bimini Nature Hiking Trail, which has educational markers with information about the native plants and wildlife you may come across. Through your exploration, you can see pine forests, mangrove marshes, and a freshwater reservoir, which means there’s a lot of different kind of life.

This natural marine nursery is also an important setting for the West African flamingo, an endangered creature you may get the chance to see. It’s also a great place to spot the Andros Rock Iguana—and the park was even recently expanded to support this iguana species and other local life. Because so much of this wilderness is untouched or barely touched, you’ll also have the opportunity to see other marine creatures (such as conches, crabs, and lobsters), North American birds, and turtles in large populations you may not get the chance to experience elsewhere.

Before you head out, you’ll want to pack a picnic lunch (and dinner, if you’d like to stay longer) and plenty of water, and it also won’t hurt to have an itinerary, transportation, or tour planned beforehand. You won’t find much in the way of restaurants within West Side National Park, but that’s what makes it so great—and its beaches could make for a beautiful place to picnic. When you’ve exhausted your legs and seen as much of the park as you’d like, you can return to Kamalame Cay for a good rest, and go to sleep thinking of all you’ve just seen.
