KAMALAME NEWSLETTER - September 2000

It is with a great sigh of relief and feeling of pleasure that we look around and enjoy all the wonderful views that have returned since completion of the major part of our extensive construction project. The additions have truly enhanced the property and provide many more accommodation options; however, our small size and exclusivity have been maintained with the total number of suites and rooms still only 12. We look forward to being able to show everyone how much our beautiful Kamalame has improved.

The Suites and Rooms

Kamalame Cay now offers a selection of exquisite suites and rooms. We feature complete villa suites as well as smaller intimate cottage suites, all with large bathrooms, oversized soaking tubs with showers and soothing ocean views. Every suite is secluded, tucked under an open cedar-shingled roof and wrapped with a well-tended seaside garden. Miles of exclusive beach directly in front of each suite beckon the beachcomber. Mahogany and Driftwood are our finest 2-bedroom villa suites while Pigeon Plum is an exceptional 1-bedroom villa suite. These all have separate sitting rooms with large wet bars and spacious covered verandahs that afford breath-taking views and cooling sea breezes. Casuarina, Cocoplum, Wild Dilly, and Sappodilla North & South are our new octagonal cottage suites. Each of these precious buildings has one large bedroom with French doors that open wide to reveal your own expansive sea view. Designed for absolute privacy, these suites are perfect for total getaway and seclusion. Laze in a comfortable lounge chair and watch the pristine water change color all day. Casuarina will open this September and a new suite should be completed each following month. We are now offering four smaller Marina rooms that overlook the new marina. These unique seaside cottage rooms are perfect for those guests who want to concentrate on fishing but still enjoy all of the wonderful details for which Kamalame is famous. Silver Top is a distinctive 2-bedroom thatch-roofed villa perched on the highest point of the Cay. Marvelous views of the glistening ocean unfold over the beach in front of the villa while the Blanket Sound tidal waters calm from behind. Native stone has been used in each bedroom adding wonderful warmth while natural pine tree trunks serve as support columns for the three pavilions that comprise Silver Top. This is the epitome of the enchanted fantasy island. It is the perfect blend of romance and adventure as many anglers quietly fish this part of the Sound behind the villa, which will be available from June through the end of January each season. The Greathouse
The two Greathouse bedrooms will now become private (or semi-private) dining rooms. These will be assigned to the Driftwood and Mahogany suites first; however, they may also be booked on a first-come, first-served basis by other guests.

The Marina

Kamalame is proud to announce that our marina is finally open. We have eight 22-ft x 50-ft slips and one large slip at the end of the T-pier. At low water these all have 8-ft depth. The channel at the creek entrance is marked and has 7-ft depth at high tide. We have also placed a channel marker at the north of Staniard Rock to guide passage through the barrier reef.

Diving and Snorkeling

At last! Enjoy the amazing reef and its colorful, living splendor directly from our own marina on the Cay. Our new 24-ft Pathfinder boat, dedicated to diving and snorkeling, is due to arrive this September. We are also actively searching for a quality, full-time divemaster — who should be on board in a couple of months. Gift Shoppe
The old stone office with its thatched roof is now going to be our Gift Shoppe. Scheduled to open before the coming winter season, we will feature our exclusive Kamalame shirts and hats, unique native crafts, personal necessities and many other interesting items.

Office

Though still quite spartan, our new office is functioning well and has led to all sorts of improvement in our efficiency. We now have a private guest phone room (which will have its own Internet connection) and a simple but useful conference room that can accommodate 8. We are now hooked up to land lines for our phones (amazing!) allowing access to e-mail — you can reach us at kamalame@batelnt.bs. No phones will be installed in the guest rooms to keep them completely stress-free. We are investigating some sort of one-way intercom system so that guests may contact us.
The Kamalame Queen
Kamalame’s exploration outpost vessel, the Kamalame Queen, should be completed by early next year. The 60-ft long by 24-ft wide boat will draw very little water so that it can be taken into shallow areas. Accommodations will be 4 staterooms, each with its own bathroom, a lounging and dining area (including an open kitchen) at the bow end, and a bunkroom and bathroom at the stern for the crew and guides. The roof will be used as a patio area. The Kamalame Queen will be moored at various places on the West and Northwest side of Andros to allow access to areas that have rarely, if ever, been fished. Four flats boats and guides will be assigned to the “Queen.” We will deliver clients to the boat by driving to North Andros and using a go-fast boat from there, or a 20-minute seaplane flight directly from the Cay will be another option at a higher cost.

Scheduled Airline Service

We have made arrangements for scheduled flights direct from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to Andros Town (Fresh Creek) twice a week for the coming winter season. Please call for further information.

Take a weight off

We now have wonderful Indonesian teak lounge chairs at the Cove and Cay pools. The old loungers have been moved in front of all the Cay rooms. More beach areas have been cleared and peaceful views have opened up through trees that have now grown taller, providing welcome shade on the beach. With ice delivered twice a day to all rooms and freshly baked cookies every afternoon, our rooms have become even more welcoming. As we sit here in the new office typing this report, the sun is shining, the breeze is cool, the coconut palms are gently swaying outside our window, the temperature is about 82 degrees, the tide is high, and the aqua-green water is shimmering through the pilings of the new marina. It is truly wonderful to see it all come together. We sincerely hope that you will come see us soon. We look forward to making your visit very special and full of fun, comfort and peace.
